Superior Baldwin Quality.....with a new feature!

I've always found Baldwin door products to be superior to most, if not all, competitors. This entry knob is no exception. Yes, you will pay a bit more for this product than some other brands. However, it comes with a lifetime warranty and the quality is there. For an interior door knob, sometimes a less expensive product will do, but for me, on an exterior door I tend to want the best. The package includes the entry knob, trim, jamb plates, strike plate, 2 keys, an Allen wrench and instructions. The only other tool you should need is a Phillips head screwdriver. As with many Baldwin locks/knobs, this product is universal, so it will fit both a right and left hand door. NOTE: You should always confirm that the lock/knob you order will match your door configuration (universal/reversible or specific to a left/right hand door. I used this knob to replace a Schlage product. While Schlage has a good reputation, I do find overall their lines are more cheaply made than Baldwin. My Schlage knob, along with the accompanying deadbolt, was not particularly inexpensive, yet both had key cylinder malfunctions. Both stopped working after only about 2 years. This is on a back door to my house, so use wasn't even close to daily, not even always weekly. The difference in the Baldwin product is clear. The outside components such as the knob, locks, etc. are noticeably heavier. The internal parts are better designed and fit together well, rather than simply being straight rods made of cheaper metals. The Baldwin finishes are always beautiful. Mine happen to be Satin Nickel and they are perfect, and arrived with protective plastic along the knob edges, which can be removed after installation. It might not sound like a big deal, but during installation, the plastic helps protect the knob while you are working around it, or if you drop it. I have the same finish on a Baldwin lock set that is exposed to the elements, and after about 4 years it still looks brand new. Installation is pretty straightforward. On a door with an existing knob, you are probably looking at 20 minutes, if that, incuding removal of the old lock. The one place I think Baldwin could use just a little improvement is on instructions. If you've installed many locks and knobs, particularly theirs, installation is a breeze. But if you have done none, or even just a few over the years, their included instructions are basic. The general, as well as step by step SmartKey, instructions were easy to follow. There are even a couple of red warning stickers on the knob parts to ensure you don't miss key steps (no pun intended) . I ran into one issue with the documentation. I ordered both this keyed knob and a matching deadbolt. These are sold separately, not as a kit, so they come with different keys, etc. However, the way my two locks shipped, if I installed them as packaged, one key cylinder would have been required I insert the key smooth side of the key up (right side up), and the other cylinder would have had the smooth side of the key down (as in the key would be "upside down" when I inserted it). I called Baldwin and they were able to walk me through how to rotate the cylinder on the keyed knob in a matter of seconds. To do so you need to remove a clip which is not mentioned in the instructions, nor does it jump out to the untrained eye. The rep did tell me that having the cylinders in different orientation did not affect functionality, which I get, but who wants two keyholes on the same door pointing in different directions? Fumbling in the dark, or rain, your child forcing a key in the wrong way - no thanks!. Their customer support was very knowledgeable and resolved my issue. I just think a little better documentation could save customers a phone call. Other than that one minor hiccup, these are some of the best lock/door knob products around. As far as SmartKey, it took literally one minute to rekey one key to match the other. If you own older or 'C' type model Baldwin keysets take note! I had hoped to rekey these new locks to match my four year old Baldwin lock. However, it appears the Smartkey technology actually comes from Kwikset (Black & Decker owns both Baldwin and Kwikset). Thus, Smartkey DOES NOT work with Baldwin 'C' keysets. You can check if your Baldwin keys are 'C' model: As long as they are actual, original Baldwin keys, check the key head. If `03' is stamped on it below the word Baldwin on either side, it is typically a C keyset and will not work with SmartKey. In the end, this is a superior entry lock/knob. It is not that much more expensive than other products, and for the extra peace of mind having a entry knob which works extremely well and is durable, along with a great warranty, I would highly recommend it.

Very high quality door knob

I first purchased a couple of these door knobs at Home Depot a few months back and was extremely impressed with the quality, ease of installation, finish, and weight of the product. So I went looking for more of them and found some on Amazon $15 cheaper than in the stores around my area. First, the door knob itself is made of a high quality material. It is easy to see if you go into the stores and check it out first hand. The brushed nickle finish is absolutely beautiful. I have recently remodled our master bathroom and used Kohler Forte series products throughout. This product matched perfectly. The knob itself is a bit larger in diameter than the ones I removed, so just grabbing onto it is a nice feeling. Immediately you can tell just by the weight that it is a very high quality product. It adds to the weight of the door, making the door itself seem light a higher end. Our house is almost 20 years old and it has currently smaller goldish brass hardware throughout. After installing the Baldwin products, I have committed myself to replacing all of the outdated hardware. Installation is very simple. If someone has access to a power drill or screw driver, it takes about 5-7 minutes per knob to install. The box includes different faceplates for mounting the latch portion. There are also ample screws to accomodate different installation needs. For my purpose, all I needed was the short screws to go into the wood, but longer ones are included just in case. Also, make sure that the screws are on the correct side of the door. It doesn't effect performance, just has to do with appearance. Hall closet door knobs can have the screw (the on seen in the Amazon picture) installed on the inside in order to clean up the outside appearance. When the installation is complete, there is no rattling, shaking, clicking sounds it makes. Just a quiet and simple turn and open. The only thing I would have prefered this product to include is that when you are on the side of the door which locks, you have to manually unlock it when leaving. My old knobs automatically unlocked, but these you have to turn the button. Not a huge deal, just something to keep in mind.

Excellent Quality & Reliability

Pros: Easy to install in less than 10 minutes with a screwdriver Feels great turning the knob Heavy, solidly built No fade or chipping Cons: Relatively expensive Purchased a dozen 7 years ago to replace aging gold/brass, interior doorknobs. Abused a ton since the install, but these Baldwin doorknobs still look and feel almost brand new, gathering few micro-scratches. Baldwin does cost more than its competitors, but overall quality and longevity was worth it.

Reasonable Product So Far

The entry knobs are solidly built, and have a quality look & feel about them. The lock's internals seem fairly standard and of reasonable quality, but there may be some room for improvement there. The locking mechanism works smoothly and as expected. The overall build quality seems good (so far), and I would expect this product to last many years of use without issue. While the item is not difficult to install, both the provided and online instructions really aren't clear in some sections. There are multiple types of similar (but slightly different) screws that could be used in one place or the other... The instructions are only clear about where to place two of these types, the other types are not listed in the instructions at all; leaving you to guess which ones should be placed where. This is further hindered by the presence of unlisted 'spare' screws... If I remember, I will update this review after the product has been used extensively.
