Finer control than bulb aspirators; more difficult to clean

The ability to suck on the tube, in my opinion, offers a greater degree of control over squeeze bulb aspirator. The one that we have isn't see through, so it's difficult to tell what's coming out of the baby's nose. We had to use this on our 20 month old this week, who is suffering from a runny/stuffy nose, and prefer the ease of use and visibility of the Braun. I like that this aspirator is made of clear plastic pieces so you can see exactly what's happening with the fluid extraction process. It comes in an eco-friendly paper box, with no plastic packaging to throw away. I wish that it also came with a long handled wire brush for cleaning the inside of the tube. I'll suppose our kindergartener's pipe cleaners from art class would work. I'll be handwashing, since this is the only way to be sure that the apparatus is thoroughly cleaned. The parts can be boiled to disinfect. The instructions say to replace the sponge filter after every use, but you could wash and re-use to a certain point, since its purpose is for your convenience and not the hygiene of the baby (so you don't get mucus in your mouth). Effective suction, if you practice.

Just so happened that my 18 month old came down with a cold so this came to good use. I compare the Braun to the NF brand because that's the most widely used manual suction. Pros: - VERY easy to clean (each section can be taken apart for very precise cleaning) - easy to hold (short suction base let's you have really good control when placing tip at baby's nostrils) - suction tip made of silicone (soft and won't hurt baby's nose) - filter is HUGE!!! (I was not worried at all about any mucus going up the tube at all) Cons: - I can't seem to suction as much out compared to the other brand - the mouthpiece felt a tad too wide, so I couldn't form a good seal with my mouth - suction base is not really transparent so you can't really see if you've successfully got the mucus out Overall, it's definitely useful. However off you're used to the other brand, you'll need some practice with this one in order to have the most effective suction.

The suction is provided by your own lungs and there is quite a bit of resistance when inhaling to get the baby's mucus out. But none of it ever reaches the silicone tubing so that's exactly what it's designed for. I would recommend this just know that it's a manual device and should be used in a pinch, not as a main device as it not easy to clean compared to electronic snot machines.

This nasal aspirator is safe and easy to use. It is gentle and effective in providing congestion relief. All in all, great quality for the price.
