Just received this yesterday, first use this morning. After a hiatus of several years, I started making bread again this fall, and am now baking twice a week. My wife had encouraged me to use her KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer, labeling it the gold standard of mixers. Takes up huge space on the counter, but is so heavy you don't want to get it out and put it away. In the past I had used 220-watt hand mixers from both KitchenAid and Cuisinart, and while they did fine at kneading, the effort caused the mechanism that secures the dough hooks in both mixers to fail, and the dough hooks kept falling out. The Braun 5100 offers a compact and more powerful alternative to the stand mixer (350-watt motor vs 325-watt on the stand mixer). From what I've read, the KA Artisan should be used for"occasional' breadmaking, suggesting it would not stand up long to twice-weekly outings. The single dough hook doesn't knead as effectively as two dough hooks. And who wants to be responsible for burning out his wife's 20-year old mixer? It also offers a sensible alternative to less powerful hand mixers. The on-off switch is easy to reach, and the motor won't run unless the beaters/dough hooks are properly mounted. The speed dial is easy to reach with your thumb, so you don't have to turn the mixer off to changes speeds. Some would say you could press the beater-eject button while mixing - anything is possible - but it's not likely to happen. The design of this device is great. The vertical motor placement makes it easy to hold and the motor's weight helps it stay in the bowl while mixing. The dough hooks are long enough to provide a lot of stretch to the dough as it's being kneaded (and kneading is more about stretching than compressing). Long story short, I have pain-de-mie dough that has the texture of satin rising in the Pullman pan right now. I will get a very fine-crumbed, tender loaf from this. Clean-up is a snap. I won't put the dough hooks in the dishwasher, though I understand they could go in there if I wanted. The mixer is compact and doesn't take up a lot of cabinet space. I never pushed the mixing speed above 5 with the bread dough so there was a ton of power in reserve. Bread dough, to me, is the best measure of how a mixer will perform. I don't use mixers for many tasks - pretty much bread dough and whipping cream. I'll be whipping cream later in the week to make Christmas pies. I think this is going to do just fine with whipping cream. Yes, there are less expensive hand mixers, but paying $30 for a mixer that that the beaters won't stay in doesn't make sense. And there are more expensive mixers - a Breville that costs almost $100. But I don't need a mixer with a light and built-in timer. For power, ease of use, compact design, comfort in hand, this one earns its five stars. Edit: OK, had it a week now, have made bread three times and this morning whipped cream for a holiday pie. So far it does everything I've asked it to do and done it without difficulty. It feels lighter in the hand than the KitchenAid and Cuisinart hand mixes, probably because of how the motor sits. For us bread junkies, the dough hooks are longer than the KitchenAid and Cuisinart dough hooks which makes kneading very easy. Mu pain-de-mie from today is simply one of the best loaves I've turned out - the Braun gave me satin dough. I like that it has a three-year warranty (I was sure to register it) so if I run into an issue with the dough hooks, I'm covered. Neither the KitchenAid or Cuisinart lasted that long. Very, very happy with this purchase.

Well-balanced & powerful, with excellent features. Wife is VERY happy! Hooray!!! ;-)
BOTTOM LINE: This Braun HM5100 mixes like nobody's business and is easy to use, clean up & store. My wife is happy. Happy wife = happy life! :-D THOUGHTS: I purchased this Braun HM5100 to replace my wife's ancient hand mixer, (which was originally her mother's and had to be at least 40 years old), when it finally gave up the ghost earlier this year. After doing a LOT of research online for the best overall value (motor power/features/user rating) I kept coming back to this unit from Braun. They generally have a solid reputation for their line of various appliances. (Braun offers a half dozen attachments which are powered by the motor of this mixer but we didn't need them, so I bought just the mixer itself.) This Braun mixer is solidly built, (dare I say, brawny?) without feeling heavy as a brick. This was a big area of concern for my wife; we also have one of those Godzilla-sized KitchenAid tabletop tilt mixers. It works awesome and we bring it out for our annual Christmas cookie bakes and the like but other than that we rarely use it because it weighs a TON & hogs up waaay too much of our precious, limited countertop space. Balance for this HM5100 is slightly forward of the front of the grip, where your first finger rests, so it naturally tilts the business end right into the bowl. Top & Bottom sections of the handle area of the mixer have dimpled rubbery plastic inserts to provide better grip when mixing, which comes in handy, (especially if your hands are slick from cooking spray, vegetable oil, egg whites, etc.). Power cord is longer than her old mixer's (over 5ft.!) and the end where the cord fits into the mixer body is thickly sheathed, to resist cracking & internal wire breakage and/or separating from the mixer body. The cord also has a neat swivel feature; it free floats or can be 'snapped' into either a vertical or horizontal position. Clever. The light weight wire beaters with plastic inserts initially gave me pause but they work great compared to the wider 'blade' style beaters of her old mixer. Fit is snug with zero wobble while mixing, plus clean up is a breeze. They are designed to fit in the mixer only one way: insert end of one beater is hexagon-shaped, the other is round. These have corresponding hexagon/round holes molded into the mixer body, making correct beater insertion fairly idiot-proof. (Whether or not the plastic pieces of these beaters will hold up over the years obviously remains to be seen.) The large ON/OFF switch on the top of the mixer has a raised rib to make it easier to thumb it on and off... and it has an interesting safety feature: it will not stay in the 'ON' position unless the beaters are fully locked into the mixer. Speed control is a large rotary dial which adjusts easily with either the thumb of the hand holding the mixer or your 'free' hand. Slick & simple. The mixer is surprisingly quiet considering the powerful motor in it; hasn't bogged down even slightly at any of the speed settings, whether mixing cookies, thick brownie mix or even bread dough. (BTW, the dough hooks seem well designed & built and are equally easy to insert/remove & clean up). Mixer body cleaned up easily with just a warm damp dishrag. Unit comes with a black cloth canvas-type drawstring bag to hold the beaters & dough hooks. Overall, we really like this mixer and I’m glad I bought it, as I use it almost as often as my wife does. In fact my only real complaint is strictly cosmetic: the mixer only comes in black. (Wife would've preferred white or red.) But that's a VERY minor grump. So far my wife & I have been very pleased with this Braun HM5100 and would recommend it to anyone out there looking for their first hand mixer, or as a replacement or upgrade.

Works well. Louder than old Black and Decker Spatula Smart.
I like that the beaters and dough hooks are stainless steel, and easy to clean! I dislike that this beater is loud and an annoying pitched noise. Especially compared to my old Black and Decker Spatula Smart beater (which still works great, but I cannot find replacement beaters for original ones that are rusting). This Braun beater seems to work great though, both whipping light and using dough hooks for stiff cookie doughs. Both types of beaters are really easy to connect, disconnect, and to clean. I guess I’ll either wear ear plugs, or crank up the music while using this beater (especially on high setting). I don’t regret this purchase. I hope to still feel that way after many many uses!

Sturdy
Braun MultiMix Hand Mixer is STURDY! Very easy to use. Very easy to attach the beaters - match the shapes to the holes! The beaters are stainless steel and are thinner than my old ones - probably why another reviewer said they seem like wires - they are not wires. Because they are thinner, batter comes off of them easier. Very easy to clean. If you like to lick the beaters, you are going to want to use a spoon to get some chocolate! The best part is that all the weight of the mixer is placed forward. All you have to do is steer the bowl.

Fantastic for egg whites
I tried the KitchenAid hand mixer and it took forever to whip egg whites and the peaks were lame. Thankfully my angel food cake baked up fine. The Braun mixer was heavier and a little tougher to hold but the results were amazing. So so quick, and my egg whites formed beautifully soft peaks. This mixer is a powerhouse winner. Highly recommend.

Braun does not disappoint
Braun products are quieter, they last long, and are easy to use/clean. Not huge and clunky like other brands who think they can own extra real estate in cupboards I don't have room for. Forget the Cuisinarts and Kitchenaid brands - I've tried them but they don't last. I always will come back to a Braun.

Mixer with good power and ease of use.
Plenty of power to mix thick batters easily. Whips stiff egg whites in a very short time. Mixer is easy to clean. Recommend this hand mixer.
