Het is ontworpen als een strategische bommenwerper op grote hoogte en wordt bemand door een bemanning van 5, waaronder een piloot, copiloot, wapensysteemofficier, navigator en officier voor elektronische oorlogsvoering (een staartschutter maakte tot 1991 ook deel uit van de bemanning).
