I've been wearing this item every day, all day ...

I've been wearing this item every day, all day, for almost a year now. I had surgery to correct a near complete tear of the lateral tendon in my right ankle, and began using an ankle brace after the surgery, because my surgeon cautioned that a second tear would likely cause irreparable damage and leave me with limited motion. Wanting to do everything I can to avoid this, I set out in search of the perfect ankle brace. Initially, I had a hard brace that was uncomfortable and too wide to fit in just about any shoe that I owned. I switched to fabric braces -- I eventually found theASO Ankle Stabilizer, Black to be about the best option for me in fabric braces, but I still felt that the fabric option was not giving quite enough support. Then I found the DonJoy Velocity ES, and I'm extremely happy. I can wear this brace all day long comfortably and it fits in most of my shoes. It's easy to put on and take off. Most of all, it feels incredibly stable, and I haven't rolled my ankle once while wearing this, though I've felt it save me on a few occasions. The downsides are as follows: You have to take some care to mold the device properly -- I used a heat gun on several occasions, and it took me about a week of fine tuning to get the hard plastic shaped just right. The Velcro isn't the greatest, in a couple regards. The Velcro that holds the lower strap in place came loose after a month or so. I replaced it with heavy duty 3M hook and loop and haven't had any problems there since. Now that the brace is about a year old, the rest of the Velcro is wearing out and is clearly not adhering as well as it used to. It's still not to the point where the brace has lost any stability, but I expect that I will be replacing the entire brace within the next few months. The final downside is true of any ankle brace I've tried -- it will get swampy underneath when it is hot outside and you are perspiring.

Excellent support, can be uncomfortable for extended periods.

I'll spare you all the story of my injury, but suffice to say I had a grade 2 talofibular and calcaneofibular sprain. I'm still in recovery, and this product is currently very valuable in aiding in my recovery. I had to change my workboot to accomodate the bulk of the brace , as I wear very form-fitting boots normally, but this is not to the detriment of the product's quality. I feel like if there were some sort of memory foam or gel involved here it would be a definite 5-star product for the price.

Worth the $

We've been buying these for our daughter for the past 4 years she plays volleyball, basketball and softball. If you follow the directions and mold the footbed to the arch of your fit they are very snug and supportive. We make sure she has them on when buying new basketball shoes so we are sure it's a good match. The only complaint is that the velcro closures wear out, so we end up buying a new pair about once per year. Before these braces she was fighting through ankle sprains on a regular basis, but none since.

Light-weight and easy to slip on and off

I had a lower fibula fracture and torn ligaments. Given the need to have additional lateral support users of this product need to keep in mind they may not be able to wear their regular shoes and will have to wear shoes that have a wide opening and/or running shoes, high-tops and similar type shoes. Overall I am very satisfied with this product.

On my 3rd one and haven't turned an ankle yet

I use these so much I've worn out 2 of them. When my therapist first showed this to me, I thought it might be too stiff to use in basketball. Turns out that stiffness is perfect support for playing. Never rubs or chafes. You forget it's there except that I've never turned an ankle in years of using it. TIP: The first ones I got were Large (I wear size 9.5US). This one is a Medium, and it fits much better and takes up less shoe room.

DONJOY HAS POOR QUALITY CONTROL

the lateral fibular stalizer [where the fractur is still healing ,has worn a wholeinto the material at the posterior/lateral heel. unfortunately i didn't get angry soon enough to meet amazons return time. i am a podiatrist. i met a rep from the co. at the Teaneck podiatry conference who advised me to send it back so DONJOY so donjoy could evaluate the mechanics of the breakdown of the material,but i am still healing and unstable and i am unable to return it to AMAZON. I will shop for a smarter device because i will need to wear an anke stabilzer for a long time.I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN DONJOY,YOU SHOULD HAVE REALIZED THSES DEVICES ARE USED FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME AND NEED TO BE DUREABLE they also put the wrong size in the box,but didn't realize it till much later

Won't fit in shoes

Didn't fit in shoe; we would either need two different sized shoes or buy a second brace for his right ankle, and also new shoes in a larger size. Either scenario required new shoes! Otherwise, seemed to help.
