Product is sound, details need working

The product would be fine but the manufacturing execution is not quite there. The instructions are simple and straightfoward especially with the template. A couple of issues that has caused a couple of trips to the hardware store: 1. The instructions for the strike plate state drill a pilot hole of 3/16". This is a too large of a hole for the wood screw provided. The screw was loose in hole. I am assuming that the instructions should be 3/32 hole diameter. Had to toothpick repair the drilled hole to avoid a mess. 2. My door thickness is 1.2 inches which is less than the 1.375" stated maximum . The 1.25 inch screws provided barely engage the threaded posts on the exterior handle set. Needs 1.5" 6-32 screws. I was given four screws of the same 1.25 inch length, where two are only needed. I assume the package should have had a couple of lengths (two at 1.25" and two at 1.5")?? 3. Manufacturing sloppiness on the interior handle set: The interior handle set latch should be slightly recessed to its interior handle set mounting plate. Here, the latch sits proud (too much material) so the latch hits the door surface before the mounting plate is fully bolted down. Therefore the door handle is tight to turn due to the interference. The door had to be hollowed out for relief or the door latch surface needs ground down a little. Some people may not want to mess with this hassle.

Negative reviews are accurate

Bought this to replace the far worse mortise latch set we put up with for too long. The good: it works pretty well once installed. The not-so-good: If I had an identical "practice door" to work on first I could have done a better job with my modest handyman skills. But it's a one-shot-at-it situation. It's possible to mount the strike plate so the handle can push either up or down. For our door it's one way only, push the handle up (which is counterintuitive but we'll live with it). The instructions are so misleading. Calls for three 1/4" holes; for the top and bottom ones it's appropriate but for the middle hole I ended up reaming the hole out with a 9/32" bit to get the squared bar that engages the exterior handle to rotate smoothly, probably could have gone up a size. Without this extra room the mechanism is way too tight, especially when the screws are snugged down. I had to do some chiseling and sanding on the door stop (3rd image) for the exterior handle housing to actually close. Doors vary in how they're installed and I suppose there's surgery necessary to make things work for some situations. I also had to make, drill and install a 1/4" shim beneath the strike plate (2nd image) to give it enough clearance to work. All told this was about 90 minutes to install. For in-swing doors there are not a lot of options besides this one and none I found were nice or elegant, wife thinks it's ugly and I have to agree. Bottom line, it works well enough but if you don't have some tools, know how and patience this might be difficult to install. Time will tell if it holds up, it's a door we don't often use.

Does not work on an outswing door

The write up said this works on an outswing door, but buried in the details it says it's only for inswing. I missed that part. The quality looks good, but it only works on an inswing door due to the way the handle engages the latch.

Good replacement handle for the price

This is the third time I have had to replace the handle, due to spring mechanism breakage. Since the spring is not accessible, replacement was the only answer. Install was easy since there was no drilling. The new one fit exactly, except for the square key that fits into the handle. The new one was 1/4 inch longer than the old one and I was unable to fit tightly against the door. Checking the specs, Ideal states: " handle set will accommodate doors that are 7/8" to 1-3/8" thick." Mine is 1" thick -- within specs, but it didn't fit snugly against the aluminum door. So I actually used the old one instead of hack sawing 1/4" off to fit properly. Everything is working as desired. However, I would like to see a smoother operating handle, as a reviewer previously noted and a more robust spring mechanism. This one doesn't seem like it will last for the long haul. But definitely acceptable and the price is right. UPDATE: After two years of use, the spring broke -- which I expected. Ordered a new handle set and installed. The end that closes the door securely was coming in contact with the door (metal on metal) so I removed everything and filed the tip that was rubbing against the door. Still wasn't closing with spring action, so I sprayed inside the mechanism, including the locking knob with WD40. Reinstalled and it works as expected. Note: this handle set is currently unavailable, so I'm hoping Ideal is working on a redesign. Needs a more robust spring.

Needed entire assembly because of broken spring

This is a direct replacement for the handle assembly on our screen door. All ours needed was a hidden spring which gave up the ghost, but was not accessible. This handle works great, easy to install, and we hope it lasts.

Easy to install

About the only drawback to an otherwise ideal replacement for a broken handle, is the screws supplied were just a little short and only one set of machine screws were supplied. Other than that minor issue it was just what I needed.

It works very well!

It is very difficult to find a security handle set for an in swinging door so I was delighted to find one and in Canada! Delivery was as promised and it was very easy to install and is working very well.

spring too tight

does not automatically spring back to horizontal position. maybe i got a bad one...

A piece of junk.

Less than one week after installing it no longer works. The spring that returns the handle to a horizontal position must be messed up. The handle is stiff to operate and stays in whatever position you leave it. The handle itself seems substantial but it does not operate properly anymore. Also the casting was not painted properly it had a couple of bare spots, look like they were chipped.I could overlook that if the darn thing worked.
