We can only rate this product based on how it operates prior to hook up, because unfortunately during the remodel we didn't WATCH the plumber put this in (it was a replacement for existing tub so we could match new fixture color). The mechanism seemed very cool and we were pleased when we took it out of the box that it operated as expected and has the flexibility mentioned by others. Well, the plumber I guess saw 'different' and decided it was easier to fit the drain and handle to the EXISTING mechanism. We didn't discover the 'left over' pieces until days later when doing the major clean up of boxes etc - we were not happy about it, but by this time it was too late to do anything about it. (Oh well, that's what you get when you just don't have the time to do it yourself). We are giving it a full 5 stars as we can't imagine any reason why it wouldn't work as well installed. One thing I think needs mentioning though - If you are retrofitting... In our case the 'flange' is quite a bit smaller than the last one and looks small in the tub depression it fits into. This is not a big enough deal to drop a star, but thought it worth noting. (Forgive the 'during remodel' pic, but it shows the size issue I mentioned)

Looks sharp and works nicely, but hope the cable assy never breaks, hahaha. My tub is upstairs, plumbing is against the exterior wall of my house, and everything is tiled on the inside. It's also unreachable if I were to go through the drywall via the downstairs ceiling... I think I should have gotten a snap/push-down plug instead, but oh well. It won't be used that often. I had this item installed by a plumber for a bathroom reno project. I have a small aesthetic gripe about the turn knob: there is a bigger gap than I would like between the turn knob and tub backing where the hole opening is. Maybe 1/8" of an inch, so if you look closely you can see the edge of the hole opening behind the knob. It's not that big of a deal, but would be a 5-star if this could be fixed... maybe provide a white or almond color plastic backing to go behind the knob... not sure. The height of the plug/stopper can be raised with a screwdriver for greater water flow. It can also be easily pulled out to take care of clogs if needed.

I installed this on my new Maax bathtub and love it! I mention this only because it seems relevant that the valve can be installed on bathtubs that are outside of the Kohler family. The installation was straight forward and as easy as joining a few pieces of PVC. Once installed, the operation of the valve is silky smooth. I have noticed that the bathtub seems to drain much more quickly than the what I became used to with the standard bathtub drain installed with the builders tub 25 years ago. I am glad I bought this cable drain setup and would do it again.

Fine for thin walled tubs
Not good for the thick acrylic tubs (as thick as 5/8" - this appears to require no more than 1/4" I would estimate)... You'll have to grind down the rear of the overflow/control area to allow adequate control stem length. This is fine if that part of the tub is hidden... If not then skip this drain system.

Can I get a longer cable?
I called kohl let and this was supposed to fit, but having time to finally install found out it does not fit my tub, hopefully I can swap for new one with a longer cable. Or can I just get a longer cable?

Works well with the new Kohler tub
We did a bathroom remodel and I was surprised to find everything I needed on Amazon. This piece was but one of several components I purchased from Amazon. I was a bit nervous ordering items with which I had limited familiarity but did some research and decided to proceed. Glad I did. All the parts were correct and they were delivered on time. I can't imagine how much time and money I would have wasted driving around to find the same items.
