Review of Lutron TGCL-153P-WH-2 --- Yes, These Work Perfectly for Dimmable LED bulbs!

I specified the product model number in the title, but I include it here too so that the review doesn't find its way to another product, as I have sometimes found in reviews. So, this is for the Lutron TGCL-153P-WH-2 single pole/3-way dimmers, in a white toggle style switch two-pack. I struggled with the conflicting information in so many reviews that I read which made me concerned about buying one and ending up having flicker when dimming my LED bulbs. My first attempt was a purchase I made at Costco of a different Lutron dimmer, which required a neutral wire to function, but my light switches didn't use a neutral wire so back it went. Searching the reviews long and hard led me to one comment that suggested the 153P family of switches work without flicker. So I took a chance on these. They fit right in with the same simple two-wire hook-up, plus ground, of the old switch, and use the same switch plate cover. So, I took a chance and bought them. To install it I turned off the breaker, removed the old switch, and installed the dimmer. Then I turned on the breaker, crossed my fingers, and turned on the switch. It turned on fine, so I adjusted the brightness, while hoping for flicker-free success. It worked perfectly from lowest brightness to full brightness with zero flicker at all settings! My wife is happy which means I'm happy. Therefore, I can fully recommend these dimmers. And I hope this review saves you the hassle I went through trying to find a dimmer for LED bulbs that works without flicker. Just be certain that you have LED bulbs that are dimmable. I suspect many negative reviews are because their LED bulbs were not dimmable. The other dimmer switches in the 153P family, such as the rocker style switch, should also work perfectly, since the internals are the same. Best of luck and I hope my review helps!

The most LED compatible dimmer on the market

Not all dimmers are created equal. The Lutron Toggler TGCL-153PH LED+ Dimmer Switch for Dimmable LED, Halogen and Incandescent Bulbs, Single-Pole or 3-Way is the most compatible dimmer on the market. I haven't found any dimmable LED bulbs that it wasn't compatible with. It also has another feature that I haven't found on any other dimmer. There is a small dial to the right of the toggle. This is used to adjust the minimum dimming of the lights. To adjust, turn on the lights, push the slider all the way down to minimum dim. Turn the dial to adjust the minimum setting for the dimness of the lights. Once the switch plate is installed, it can't be tampered with. You wouldn't want this adjusted to a point that the lights were completely off, but it should be adjusted to what your minimum preference is, just not off; that's what the toggle switch is for. Also, if you change the bulbs to a different brand, you may need to readjust the minimum dim. Different bulbs are just that, different. The other good thing about this switch is that it can be installed as either a single pole or 3-way switch. The copper colored screw should be used for the line/load wire in a 3-way installation and the 2 brass screws for the traveler wires. For single pole installation, use the copper screw for the line (power in "HOT" wire) and the brass screw on the opposite side of the switch for the load (light). These are the best dimmer switches that you will find for the money. They're an even greater buy in the 3-pack.

Good Replacement for Regular Switch

A dinner table on the porch required dimming the porch overhead light. This was controlled from one switch in an indoor 3 gang (three switches in a row) box. I had one similar dimmer installed in the box already. The new dimmer replaced the middle switch; however, it would not fit in the box next to the other dimmer. The directions say to remove some tabs from the dimmer front plate so that two dimmers can fit next to each other, but this would reduce the dimmer's power handling capability. I really didn't feel like doing this to both dimmers. Instead, I installed the middle switch on the other side, and the regular switch in the middle. I was afraid of negative feedback from confused family members, but they were so happy to now have a dimmer, it didn't matter (and it turns out they didn't actually remember the old switch order, anyway). This unit has an adjustment for the dimming range. This worked well for the bulbs that I had installed. If I replace the bulbs, I expect to have to re-adjust the setting, but that is no big deal, since the LED bulbs are supposed to last for years and years. LED bulbs cannot be dimmed to the very dim levels possible with an incandescent bulb. This is not a fault of the dimmer, it is just a consequence of LED bulbs not having a, say, 1000 to 1 dimming range. This was a problem for the bathroom light because I wanted this fixture to have a very low minimum setting for middle of the night use. I solved this problem by using one low wattage incandescent bulb in the 3 bulb fixture. The fixture now has a very wide range. This was not necessary for the porch dining light, which has about a 20 to 1 range or so, which is adequate for most uses. Perhaps modern dimmable LED bulbs have improved and this is no longer necessary. There was no flickering or instability. If you have trouble with this dimmer, try changing the LED bulb for another, modern, type. I had to go through many different brands a couple of years ago when I first started dimming LED bulbs. The 2 way configuration of this switch is appreciated, although I have not used it. I like the way it fits into an existing standard switch plate, and that the dimmer control is just a tiny lever on the side, and the toggle works without affecting the dimming setting, which is just perfect.

1 of 3 units did not work properly

The, "Lutron Toggler LED+ Dimmer Switch, 3-way" works great for the 2 of 3 installed. 1 unit did not function as a 3-way, as if there was a missing part internally. I did not request a replacement, since I repurposed it as a typical single switch install.

Works great out of the box. Needed no adjustment of dimming range for a wide range of dimmer capability on the 2 GU10 LED light fixtures that I installed. Both fixtures had 3 LED GU10/50w equivalent dimmable bulbs.
