Overall it is a pretty nice collar
Overall it is a pretty nice collar. I got it for our 16 lb Boston terrier in X-small size. It is bright red color with silky texture, looks much nicer than in the picture. All the seams are hidden or on the outside, so they can't rub/ create soars. It is also very convenient to have a quick release buckle, our previous martingale collar didn't have one because our trainer told us that they usually break, but our dog is too small to break it and his other non-martingale collar with a buckle never broke so we figured it should be fine and it is. I gave this collar 4 starts, because first of all it has a big black-and-blue company label sewn on it so it takes up most of the red ribbon (it is not visible on the product picture since it is on the farthest side). It's not a big deal, but I thought the label could be smaller not to cover nice red color. Furthermore, the sizing chart is indeed misleading. It says that X-small measures from 8-12" which I would think means circumference of dog's neck. However, it is just the length of the fabric collar, not including the chain. When you add chain, it is bigger than these measurements. Our dog's neck is 12" and you can't tighten the collar any more for him (it's on its minimum possible length). It works for us (though it's a bit loose to my taste), but probably won't work for a dog with thinner neck, because then it will be hard to get a tangible correcting tightening effect when the dog pulls. I'd say 12" is probably minimum neck size this collar will work for. Overall, i'd like to mention that if you are planning to use this collar and want it to work right, you should consult with a trainer who will teach you how to use it properly to correct your dog and stop the pulling habit. Our dog was trained with a Martingale collar so this collar works for him. The idea is not to have it very tight and strangle your dog. In the process of training the dog learns that when he /she pulls, the chain starts to tighten and its links make clicking noises. Our trainer told us to stop after three clicks and wait until the dog makes a step back in order to get some slack. After a while the dog learns and knows the clicking noises and stops pulling when hearing them before the chain tightens further. This might be a confusing description, but my point is that the collar itself won't teach your dog not to pull:)

Well made Martingale collar.
By way of background, my high energy rescue Terrier mix (thought to be Jack Russell x Whippet) loves to run and obsesses over squirrels. Rabbits, chipmunks, birds and the occasional fox are great fun, too, but nothing excites him like squirrels. I have a dog tolerant park across the street, which has an abundance of oak trees as well as concomitant squirrels. I let him burn energy by running after the squirrels on a 26' Flexi Freedom leash, and he often takes a 50' run at them. In the past, this has resulted in a number of broken leather collars, which was not only expensive, but resulted in a dog running loose with no tags. To prevent that, I've resorted to using two collars. His full time Perri leather dress collar holds his tags. The second goes on with his leash. At first, I tried a standard chain collar for its strength, but wasn't too happy with that as the dog dislikes having a collar placed over his head and, worse, the chain is hard on his neck when he hits the end of the leash running full speed (something he has learned to avoid most of the time, but not always). Standard martingale collars alleviated the later somewhat, but not his aversion to having a collar placed over his head. Regular snap on collars were okay, but unless I make them tighter than I prefer, they tend to slide over his small Whippet-like head when he decides to back up. I finally found these, which are exactly what I wanted. They are pricey, but seem to be very well made and likely to last a long time. They snap on quickly and smoothly (not all snap-ons do), and fit him comfortably. As someone mentioned, they do seem to run a bit large. At its minimum circumference, the small size does not squeeze my 21 lb. dog's 12-1/2 inch neck (indeed, the collar measures nearly 13 inches at its smallest setting by my calculation), but it also does not slide over his head, so it is fine for my purposes. I have no doubt they'd serve very well as an everyday collar for those with more conventional needs as well, but you might need a size smaller than you think.

Good quality; chain leaves color on fur if it gets wet.
I have a 28lb beagle/border collie mix with a deceptively skinny 10" neck. It is really hard for me to find a collar that is the right length, but still wide enough to be effective for her. We are in the X-small category for most brands, and 99% of those only have 1/2 inch wide collars, which would end up being a garrote on my little bundle of muscle and energy with no leash manners! So, I was VERY excited to find the 3/4 in our size (her requirement) that also had quick release buckle and extra d-ring for tags (my requirements). The collar is performing well, the size is perfect to allow that little bit of 'chain noise' that helps to signal the correction behavior to the dog. After a recent roll in the mud and subsequent bath, I put the collar back on while her fur was still a bit damp and the chain did leave a gray discoloration on the white neck fur, which means that the stainless steel is tarnishing. Since I can't keep this dog away from water and mud, I will have to be mindful to just use it for training and take it off her otherwise. Overall good, sturdy construction other than that tarnishing chain.
